CHENNAI: Customs officials at Chennai international airport on Tuesday morning seized 583 gram of gold, worth Rs 27.8 lakh, from a passenger. The passenger was arrested.
Based on intelligence, customs officials intercepted a 45-year-old-man who arrived from Dubai in an Emirates flight (EK-542) at 2.40am.
On personal search of the passenger, four bundles of gold in paste form were recovered from his rectum.
On extraction, one gold ingot of 24K purity -- weighing 583 grams and worth Rs 27.8 lakh -- was recovered. It was seized under the Customs Act, 1962.
